Can your business really afford to run ChatGPT ads? Here’s a study

ChatGPT ads just went live in 26 more countries.

That brings the total to 89, a little over eight months after launch. And according to OpenAI, more than 100,000 advertisers have already run campaigns.

So should your small business be next?

I dug through OpenAI's own help pages, a 42-account benchmark and a pile of early campaign reports to find out what a click really costs, and what it actually brings back.

The Reach Is Huge

OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week.

That's roughly one in every seven people on Earth. They're asking it what to buy, who to hire and which tool to try.

There's a catch, though. Ads only show on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise users never see them, so the people paying OpenAI the most are out of reach. Remember, these could be the real buyers. The people who have money to spend.

Why Advertisers Are Excited

It's the timing.

Nobody is scrolling past your ad between cat videos. People on ChatGPT are in the middle of a decision, typing things like "which CRM should I pick" or "best dentist near me." OpenAI's own example is a grocery delivery ad showing up while someone plans the week's meals.

That's the exact moment Google has charged a fortune for over the past twenty years.

How ChatGPT Ads Pricing Works

You can buy ads in three ways, according to OpenAI's campaign guide.

  • Per 1,000 views (CPM) for pure visibility.
  • Per click (CPC) to drive traffic to your site.
  • Conversion-optimized, where the system hunts for sales or sign-ups, but you still pay per click or per view. You never pay per conversion.

The minimum daily budget is $25 in the US. Leave it running and that's roughly $750 a month. It's 15 euros or 15 pounds a day in Europe and the UK, and 725 rupees in India.

Targeting is different too. There are no keywords. You give the system plain-English "context hints" about the conversations you want to appear in, plus country, region, city or postcode. Custom audiences arrived in August, but you need at least 25,000 matched users to use one.

So What Does a Click Actually Cost?

Here's the awkward part. OpenAI doesn't publish an average.

It suggests bidding $3 to $5 a click, but that's a ceiling, not what you'll actually pay.

The best public data comes from Bytown, an agency that tracked 42 small-business accounts and $53,649 in spend from May to August 2026. Their numbers looked like this.

  • Average cost per click of $2.42
  • Average click-through rate of 2.78%
  • Average conversion rate of 4.85%
  • Average cost per acquisition of about $50

Other advertisers saw something very different. Reported clicks ran anywhere from $1.72 to $13, and one firm says it burned through $500 in about an hour.

How That Compares With Google and Facebook

For context, a Google Search click averages $5.42 in 2026, according to WordStream. Lawyers pay closer to $9.87, and dentists about $8.

Facebook is far cheaper. WordStream's 2026 benchmarks put the median traffic click at 60 cents, and a lead-ad click at $1.80. Facebook's median cost per lead is $27.39, against Google's $66.69.

So ChatGPT sits in the middle. It's often cheaper than Google, but roughly four times what Facebook charges for a visitor.

Put it in budget terms and the gap gets clearer.

The same $750 that buys about 310 ChatGPT clicks buys roughly 1,250 Facebook traffic clicks.

Your Industry Changes Everything

That $2.42 average hides a massive spread.

In Bytown's data, non-profits paid just 74 cents a click. Engineering firms paid $6.65, nine times more. Their cost per acquisition swung even harder, from $12 to $349.

Local service businesses came out well. Landscaping averaged $1.37 a click with an 8.52% conversion rate, and HVAC firms paid $1.84. B2B companies paid the most and converted the least.

So before you take any average at face value, ask whether it came from businesses like yours.

The Honest Catch

Most early tests published clicks, not customers.

And several small advertisers got nothing at all.

Clicks, not customers. Early ChatGPT ad tests with spend, clicks, cost per click and zero sales or leads

One agency, Grow My Ads, spent about $1,200 over two weeks. It got 92 clicks at around $13 each, and zero conversions. Its verdict was blunt. A curiosity, not a channel.

A Canadian agency quoted by MediaPost spent $415, got 60 clicks at about $7 and found no interested buyers. A B2B lead-gen firm saw OpenAI report 57 clicks while Google Analytics recorded fewer than 20 visits.

To be fair, most of these tests ran before OpenAI added conversion tracking, its pixel and geotargeting in August. It's a young auction, and the tools are still catching up.

But right now, you're paying to learn.

Should Your Small Business Try ChatGPT Ads?

Here's my verdict.

Try it now if you sell something pricey, like a high-ticket service, B2B software or a big local job, and you have a few hundred dollars you're happy to spend on learning. Getting in early while the auction is quiet can pay off later.

Hold off if every dollar has to turn into a sale this month. ChatGPT ads aren't your first stop yet.

Facebook still is.

It has cheaper clicks, years of benchmarks and targeting tools that actually work today. Win there first, then test the shiny new channel with money you can afford to lose.
